Infusing Vodka by Robert on Apr 09, 2009 at 10:48 am

There are plenty of flavored vodkas out there to buy, but some folks in Staten Island remind us that we can infuse our vodka with anything from tea to fruits.

I've been meaning to infuse some vodka, but I've never gotten around to it. It'll be a great summer project to get an infusion jar and try some recipes (bacon vodka won't be one I try, though).

If you've ever played with infusing vodka, let us know how it went.

I have infused a few things, skittles, mandarin oranges, starburst fruit chews... planning on trying some more creative ones this summer myself... fresh mint from my garden will be likely.

Fresh mint sounds really interesting. I need to get around to making that planter to see what we can come up with. How'd your previous experiments go? Any one you'd suggest to a first time infuser?

the mandarin (think it was actually naval orange) one can out not too impressive
the skittles & starburst ones came out tasty, but the cornstarch and other additives they put in that stuff to make it chewy floats on the top, making it less appetising, tried to put it through a coffee filter, and that didn't work. i zapped it in the microwave a little and that disoved most of the starch, however i am guessing it will have also evaporated some of the alcohol.

next one, i think i will do hard candy, like jolly ranchers, which shouldn't have as much extra crud added to it.

I've found infusing with a fresh pineapple is extremely good. Actually I just chopped up a pineapple and put it in a big jar with some Tito's earlier tonight. Going to let it sit on the shelf for 2-3 weeks then strain the pineapple out.

Well finally strained it today and used cheesecloth to squeeze all the vodka out of the pineapple chunks. It's absolutely delicious, you almost can't tell you're drinking alcohol and it's got a good pineapple flavor without being too sweet. I've had it before with Stoli but I think it came out much better with the Tito's. Has been a huge hit with my family as well, I'm very pleased with the results.
