Gilbey’s Vodka Review

Gilbey’s is another bottom shelf vodka that I’m trying out of obligation. There’s nothing notable about it from the surface. Let’s see what’s under the cap.

The Shot

Glibey’s is offensive. The taste is unsettling but not distinctively bitter at first. It doesn’t take long for the bitter flavors to come through. The flavor seems to permeate the nasal cavity, even. It doesn’t get better, as the swallow burns and the aftertaste is purely bitter. This is not a shooter.

The Mixed Drink

I mixed Gilbey’s a little less than one part vodka with two parts Passion Fruit juice. The bitters shine through the sweet juice. It’s impossible to ignore the vodka, and it ruins the drink. This isn’t a vodka worth mixing when there are better vodkas like Taaka, which doesn’t say much.

Opinions

Daniel and Mel did a shot with me. The overwhelming opinion was bad. Daniel and Mel both made a horrible face and commented on the bitter flavor.

If you’re stuck looking around your ankles, there are simply too many better bottom shelf vodkas to be had. If you can shell out a little bit more, there are far better lower-end vodkas to be had. I wouldn’t torture myself with Gilbey’s.

Rated 0 out of 5.

For the price it’s pretty good. Mixed with orange juice it’s drinkable and gets the job done in short order.

Honestly guys, who the heck drinks Vodka for taste?

I agree somewhat. You drink vodka to get hammered, not to bask in its taste.
But the thing is, Gilbey’s taste bad even when it’s in your stomache. Also comes with it some of the worst hangovers i’ve ever had.

My parents aren’t drinkers, but they keep some liquor around to entertain guests. I’m visiting them for the holidays and ran out of the decent vodka I bought when I got here. So I tried this bottle at the urging of my dad (who seems to think aging vodka is like aging wine). Popov was the only other choice, so I danced into the unknown with Gilby’s.

Let me tell you about this stuff. Seconds after taking a drink, it assaults your nostrils in a way not unlike what I’ve read prison sex to be. Oh, you can hold your breath and down the drink, but you’ll have to inhale sometime, and when you do, it’ll be there- like an overdue credit card bill. The aftertaste is so terse, I wondered if they inadvertently put Gilby’s gin in the bottle.

Cheap vodka is one thing, but we can do better…and we HAVE. For all you folks decrying the poor reviews in the name of fiscal conservatism, I offer you Kamchatka. You want your $8 750 ML? They’ve got you covered.

Meanwhile, think of me doing my parents a service by jumping on this filthy grenade in the hopes of working my way “up” to the Popov.

I’m no stranger to vodka, both premium and budget. If I was to recommend a cheap brand to anyone, it would be Gilbey’s (if they are unable to afford Svedka). While some of you say it’s harsh, I say you haven’t had enough cheap shit; this is the smoothest, cleanest vodka I’ve found it its price range, and that warrants a solid 4.

I’ve had Skol, Hawkeye, Aristocrat, Krakov, Popov, Gordon’s, McCormic, Fleishmann’s, Rikaloff, ect… the whole nine yards of crap vodka.. That has been my duty as a college student. That being said, this is easily the worst cheap vodka I’ve ever had. The only way to drink this is at $9.99 a handle while severely depressed. Chaser is the only way to go — mixers won’t help. Pairs well with sleeping on the street and living in a cardboard box.

Clean & medicinal on the nose. Virtually no taste, with a slight sweetness in the finish. Overall too medicinal/ethanol for me, but it should be fine mixed.

I don’t understand you drinkers. I sent my man to the liquor store to get a vodka that’s affordable and he came back with this vodka. We love it. It lasts us a week or so to finish it. I love it. It gets straight to the point. I be literally on cloud nine. Lol. Just don’t down the whole bottle. Three drinks you good.

Worst vodka I have ever had the misfortune to imbibe. Sharp, residual, bitter whichever way you have it. Funnily enough it packs some punch.

Ok. Honest opinion and honest review. I purchased Gibleys Vodka because I am more of a beer drinker for over 20 years but I felt like drinking Vodka but wanted to save a buck as I don’t drink vodka much. I made the mistake of drinking half of the bottle straight with no chaser. The first few shots burned my throat but it got better after a couple. The next day I did not have a hangover but by the end of the day my esophagus and stomach were burning intensely.

For the next week I could not swallow any food or drink without the most uncomfortable burning sensation. I honestly believe it felt as if I scared or burned the lining in my stomach and throat. That was in July, here it is Christmas day and I was in the cabinet and I forgot I had this hidden away. I went online to see some reviews and after reading these posts, the second half of this bottle is going down the sink. There was a reason I put this in the back of the cabinet and it was out of sight.
    NEVER AGAIN

Good bad or indiffernt. Here is what I did when I hosted a martini party. I bought Chopin, Belvedere, Grey Goose and Gilbey’s. I mix my martini with gin so I picked p Gilbey’s gin, Tanqueray 10 and Bombay Sapphire. and I use Martini and Rossi Dry Vermouth.

I made batches of the martini’s ahead of time so only I knew what were the mixes.

Everyone who had a martini that night came back for the Gilbey’s mix over all the other top end ones. I personally was floored! Maybe it was my mixology, maybe it just tasted better to them than the top ends.

A friend and I bought a bottle of this to try to end an awful day in a less awful fashion. So we bought this and some redbull to mix at the hotel. Even having just a bit of vodka in there overshadowed the taste of redbull by far. In the end it tasted so horrible we had huge troubles downing the glass, after which we went to bed even more in a bad mood.

In the end, the bottle stayed in the hotel as a gift to the staff, after another 3-4 of our friends refused to accept it after having had a taste. Worst vodka I have ever come across.

The worst vodka I’ve ever tasted, and I’ve tried other bottom shelf vodkas. It made me gag every time I took a sip. I even mixed it with cranberry juice and the taste just wouldn’t go away. Although after one cup I was feeling pretty woozy.

Worst vodka ever – it was bitter, leaves a burning sensation in your mouth, and will give you massive nausea. Bought this because I was on budget and it left me with a hangover from Hell. Literally, if you want to get as close to death as possible, load up on this drink. It may take you to see God or Satan himself after a couple of rounds. DO NOT BUY THIS “VODKA” AT ALL COST!!!

Ahhhh Gilby’s !!! It’s OK mixed in a Bloody Mary with fresh squeezed lime, Tabasco, Lea & Perrin’s and some Celery salt. The bitterness compliments the Bloody Mary. I do not have to buy Argosta Bitters!!! It is not meant to drink straight or with sweet mixers, Only uneducated fool’s would drink this straight or with sweet mixes!! I normally use a Polish Vodka from Trader Joe’s for $10 and it’s on par with Smirnoff Vodka which makes great bloody Caesars with fresh squeezed lime. I live in Thailand with a 300% Tax on Imported Alcohol. This CrapOla is almost OK at $10 a bottle. BTW our beer here is served to you in Big Bomber Bottles at a Bar for $1.25 and it’s 6%…………… Many over priced snob Vodka’s out there, Don’t waste your money!! Smiranoff came in #1 in a Blind fold the st against Chopin, Grey Goose and Ketel One Vodka!!! I like Absolute mixed in Fresh Orange juice. If your mixing don’t waste your money on expensive Booze. Cheers from Northern Asia!!!!!

A few times a year I purchase Gilbeys because “I forget” how bad the hang over is, yes, I make the purchase on a budget situation and to “mix things up”. Hands down, the Gilbey’s hangover is the worst hangover of any liquor period. I had 3 very stiff drinks last night which is normal for me on a weekend night, so I know what to expect in the morning. I had the same amount as always but this time used Gilbey’s and OMG, I can’t feel my lips, my tongue tastes like playdough and even by fingers are numb. My eyes and nose are numb and ache and the head ache is liget and I NEVER get head aches from hangovers. You know liquor is actually a “poison” and today I fully believe I drank POISON and I’m suffering so bad…… it’s the worst.

Quite recently, a friend of mine was planning on making a stop at our local liquor store and asked me if I wanted to get some vodka with him. I told him I wasn’t feeling up to going outside, but to give me something I’ve never tried before, something that usually leads to some pleasant surprises. He agreed and about half an hour later, he brought back a bottle of Gilbey’s. For its price, it didn’t seem so bad, but once I opened the cap, I started having second thoughts; upon my first shot, I immediately dreaded finishing the bottle.

This is, without any doubt at all, the most absolutely abysmal vodka I’ve ever tasted. It smells like rubbing alcohol and the taste isn’t that far off. Out of desperation and not wanting to waste the vodka, I tried mixing it with various things – soda, strawberry tea, even milk and powdered sugar (I was fairly intoxicated and it sounded like a good idea at the time), and every time, the vodka overpowered the taste of whatever I put it in, save the fruit punch if you mixed it right. For that, it gets one star.

To summarize, if you’re on a budget and don’t mind a drink that leaves horrible fumes running up the back of your throat when you drink it straight and a terrible hangover the next day, this vodka is for you.
