Hangar 1 Vodka Review

Hangar 1 Vodka is one of those vodkas I’ve seen quite a few times, but never bothered to try. Today, I’ll see what it’s all about.

The Shot

Hangar 1 Vodka is essentially flavorless in the mouth. To boot, it’s totally smooth on the way down. There is an odd aftertaste that I can’t put my finger on except to say it’s probably the flavor Trump Vodka was going for but failed. It’s not unpleasant, but it is a surprise the first time around. This vodka is great straight and doesn’t need a chaser.

After spending a week with Hangar 1 Vodka, I’ve changed my mind. Hangar 1 has a bad flavor in the mouth. When I first tried it, the vodka seemed flavorless, but the more I had throughout the week, the worse it got. It still doesn’t require a chaser, but it really helps to get rid of the very odd and stomach-churning flavor. Hangar 1 “straight” is purportedly amazing in a martini. I don’t drink martinis, but drinking this straight isn’t terribly impressive. I’ve had worse, though. So, the rating has dropped from 5 to 3.

The Mixed Drink

I mixed Hangar 1 Vodka orange juice at one part vodka to two parts OJ. Hangar 1 seemed to pull the sweetness of the juice, and replaced it with the odd flavor I discussed above. It’s certainly not the best screwdriver I’ve had, but it’s palatable.

Opinions

Hangar 1 Vodka is a great shooting vodka. The neutral flavor in the mouth combined with the smooth saunter down to the stomach ranks this vodka up. The lackluster screwdriver, though, should be a warning for cocktail drinkers. If you’re into straight vodka, try Hangar 1. If you’re into cocktails, you could find something better, though it wouldn’t be hard to find something worse.

Rated 3 out of 5.

I tried the lime flavor Hanger and really liked it so much that I bought four more bottles (750 ml). But all of these had a very bad after taste that I could not drink! Has anyone had the same experience??

Hanger 1, Different! I have the best vodkas in my cabinet and this one does not play the same field as they as traditional vodkas do. I like the grain but the “hangar” on taste is not what I consider pleasant. I would think this maybe the kind of stuff that can be accepted if we were in a mash unit making your own. My rating is 2 to 3 as a traditional brew and a 4 as something different.

I can’t understand how New Amsterdam rates one star above Hangar One on this site. New Amsterdam is bitter, but harsh from entry through swallow at room temp period! It’s a step above drinking E85 ethanol out of a Brazilian fueling station hose. Hangar One ( distilled grape, grain derivative blend) not most flavorful but definitely mixes well, but price fetches 27.99 per fifth on Long Island. If found under 25 dollars then definitely a good domestic choice, but for 30 bucks go with ZYR Russian or Chopin Potato.

Please try Hanger 1 Buddha Fingers edition. The plain vodka is a joke. They make their vodka in an airplane hanger hence Hanger 1. Their flavored vodkas are unmatched literally but the plain version should be marked down considerably.

Love, love, love Hanger 1 Vodka. Second only to the Russian or Polish Vodkas you can’t get stateside. At least in my opinion, which is based on many years tasting a plethora of spirits my fav being Vodka. Also, easy tasty drink w/ Hanger 1 Mandarin is 1 part Vo to 2 parts seltzer with fresh squeeze from orange wedge…ahhhh

Grabbed a bottle of Hangar One awhile back, I really liked it for shots. I’m kinda surprised you rate it so low.

It goes down really smooth with no burn, and I liked the flavor well enough. It is made from wheat and grapes, and you can detect a bit of grape in the aftertaste. Perhaps that is the odd taste you were referring to? It didn’t bother me, but then I like wine and cognac, maybe that flavor isn’t your thing.

What I liked best about Hangar 1, is that I can drink several shots and feel absolutely fine the next day. I’m not as young as I once was, and a lot of vodkas, even premium ones, make me feel pretty lagged the morning after a moderate drinking session.

The mandarin version is pretty good too. I’m not usually one for flavored vodkas, and I liked the straight version better for shots, but I think the mandarin would mix better. I need to try it with orange juice.

      Addendum:
Picked up a couple bottles of Hangar one for a New Years party. The straight hangar one is not a good mixer, at least not for sweet drinks. I tried it with both sprite and orange juice and neither were spectacular. They weren’t terrible, but it is a waste of good vodka when you could do a better job with cheaper stuff. Save the straight for shots.

Then I mixed 1 part mandarin hangar one with 2 parts orange juice and it was quite good. No alcohol taste. It made the orange juice slightly less sweet and gave it a bit of mandarin flavor. All in all a very pleasant drink that you could gulp down.

I also tried the raspberry hangar one. It’s not bad, but not for me. The shot instantly hits you with an overwhelming, over-ripe raspberry flavor. That only lasts a second though, then you are left with the flavor of raspberry juice. No burn, but you’d have to really like raspberry to like this shot. I then mixed some with sprite, and it was better, but still not quite there. It needed a bit of something sour, so I squeezed in a wedge of lime. This tasted quite good, but a bit girly like a wine cooler. I mixed a few of those for the ladies and went back to shots of Hangar straight.

Next time, I think I’ll try vodka14 or Kai Lychee. I hear good things about both.

I recently tried the Hangar One raspberry mixed with sprite and it was AMAZING. Give it a try if you see it. The bartender sold me on their whole line of flavors and mentioned something about them being wine-infused, but I lost interest in the conversation at this point and couldn’t stop thinking about how good my drink tasted.

I would have to say that, after two martinis made with Hangar 1, that it is a very good vodka. The initial impression is of silky smoothness with a neutral, if not somewhat sweet, flavor. The swallow is mild with very little burn and aftertaste. While I’ve had better vodkas in a martini, this one is very good. In fact, I will give it 4 stars out of 5. At $26.99 per 750 ml bottle in my neck of the woods, I can get some other vodkas, such as Sobieski, that are cheaper and just as good. Crystal Head, Stoli Elite, and Russian Standard, are better vodkas, though they cost significantly more than Hangar 1. Americana and Zyr are better as well, and they cost about the same, so I would likely pick up a bottle of those rather than the solid performing Hangar 1 in the future.

I would like to post a correction to my previous statement. Russian Standard is not more expensive than Hangar 1. In fact, it is cheaper and a bit better, so it would certainly be a better choice than Hangar 1 in my opinion.

I’m sorry to hear you had a bad experience with this vodka. I drink vodka on the rocks and really enjoy the flavor of Hangar 1 Straight. They add viogner (wine) to the vodka before the whole process is over. It gives the vodka its “perfume”. I agree with you in that if you dont have a developed palate for vodka and prefer to mix then something like Svedka is more suitable. Dont waste your money on a vodka if you cant enjoy it.
