Vikingfjord

3 StarStarStarStarStar

Vikingfjord is a 40% ABV vodka from Norway. It is filtered with Charcoal. The vodka is produced by Arcus AS and imported by Capstone International. The quality is considered to be good. The average price is around $9.42 per 750mL. Rated 3 out of 5 based on 12 reviews.

The bottle states the following:

Vikingfjord vodka comes from Norway, where quality and excellence are a way of life. Following a time honoured, authentic vodka recipe, this carefully six column distilled vodka is made from potatoes. Every drop is then expertly blended with 100% smooth, crystal clear water from the pristine Jostedal glacier of Arctic Norway.

Vikingfjord Vodka Review

I’ve seen Vikingfjord for a long time but I never bothered to pick it up. I decided to give the vodka a taste. This is the first vodka from Norway I’ve tried. It is a potato vodka, though, which I’ve traditionally enjoyed.

The Shot

Vikinfjord is bitter up front and stays bitter on the pallet even after the swallow. It burns a bit on the way down. While I could get by without a chaser, it’s really nice to have one.

The Mixed Drink

I mixed Vikingfjord with Strawberry Breeze, a Welch’s flavor. There are some moderate bitter flavors from the vodka that come through the sweet mixer. After swallowing the drink, the bitters stick around on my pallet. It’s not a good sign when I want a chaser for my cocktail. This is a typical response for a vodka in this price range, however. It may pass in a club situation, but it isn’t great for casual drinking.

Opinions

Vikingfjord is a decent entry in the lower midrange. For the price, however, there are better vodkas for the price like Sobieski.

Rated 2 out of 5.

I have to disagree with this rating…I’ve tried a lot of vodkas, from the bottom to the top shelf. Cheap Popov or Gran Legacy in college to Grey Goose…and Viking Fjord is smooth without a bite or bitter taste…Maybe I’ve numbed my tastebuds from years of vodka drinking, but I’ve switched to VF from my usual Smirnoff/Stoli…This is a good vodka

I also disagree with author Robert. I drink exclusively potato Vodka. I loved Vikingfjord, very smooth, not bitter. Unfortunately local stores in Vermont no longer carry. I’m happy with Polish brand potato vodkas. Trader Joe has an unpronounceable one that was good but Vermont TJ’s can’t sell hard liquor. I have tried more expensive brands like Tito’s or Chopin. I did not think they were better than my midpriced Polish vodka. In fact the very expensive Tito’s leaves quite a burn on the tongue. Chopins is nicer but for smooth and not so much bite I’ll stick with LUKSUSOWA about $15.00 for 750ml.

I had to comment on the comment that “Sobieski” is a better Vodka than “Viking Fjord”. I like Viking Fjord because unlike MOST vodka [including more expensive Yuppie Vodka, I find Viking Fjord to be very smooth. When I read the comment that “Sobieski” was a better Vodka in the price range, I had to go try it. Well Sobieski tastes JUST as brutal as the Yuppie brands, but it IS cheaper than the yuppie brands, but the reason I always enjoyed Viking Fjord was because it was cheaper AND SMOOTHER.
If you HAVE to have a HARSH vodka, then by ALL MEANS buy “Sobieski”.
I’ll stick with the smooth tingle Viking Fjord, and save my money, AND my throat!

My favorite way to drink vodka is room temperature, about two shots in a regular 8-12 oz glass, and I like to sip it. A beer chaser is also nice [ I like whiskey the same way].

The ONLY other way for me is mixed with orange juice [as in screwdriver]

I have been a fan of Vikingfjord vodka for over a year, but a recent case purchase was a disaster. The flavor changed to a harsh strong taste decidedly different from the past. I advised Vikingfjord thru their Contact Us site and after a considerable length of time , received no answer. It appears to have suffered a Quality degradation and I would not recommend it.

Exceptionally clean nose, smooth, no burn or aftertaste going down. Smoothest best value vodka I can find here in Texas. 1.75 liter costs only $14 here. Better as a mixer than a martini sipper.

I don’t know how this is rated so low. At less than $20 a handle everywhere I’ve shopped, this is by far the best vodka for the mid price range. Better than Smirnoff, Svedka, Select, Imperia, and Glacier. Goes down smooth if chilled and perfectly fine mixed.

@mbb: Nobody gets paid to do this. I just tried Vikingfjord. When I opened the bottle, I had to grit my teeth and move on, because it smelled so medicinal. It burns a bit, but it’s fine for mixing. It is absolutely not a sipper, even ice cold. It’s $15/750ml here in NYC, so it makes sense to switch to it from Smirnoff, which is just bad candy (not necessarily from Stolichnaya, though, unless you’re just looking to mix), but IMO it doesn’t make sense to switch to it from Sobieski, which costs the same and is easier on me, anyway.

I have no trouble believing that you folks don’t get paid! I guess this proves that beauty is in the eye of the beerholder! I have yet to find a smoother, softer vodka for under $25! I found Sobieski to be incredibly spicy and harsh, impossible to take neat, and unwilling to lay down in a cocktail. VikingFjord is my go to sipper, best appreciated at room temp. If one really takes the time to taste it (like you would a fine wine) you’ll notice a bit of vanilla and maybe a hint of marshmallow… flavors that cheap grain swill like smirnoff try to attain with gobs of artificial sweeteners.

This vodka surprised the he ll out of me. I didn’t expect much and was blown away by its incredible taste and ease going down. I was also surprised by the review. Over the last year I’ve taken a liking to vodka and have frequented this website as an authority on the topic. This is the first review I disagree with. While this isn’t my favorite potatoe vodka, it’s very near Chopin and Luksusowa. I’m not sure why Sobieski is being compared to this vodka either. There is really no comparison and both are amazing libations in there own right.

i recently purchased a bottle of VF since my standard mixed vodka Smirnoff comes in a plastic bottle now (at least, in the 1.75l variety). I was pleasantly surprised at this particular brand; little to no bite when sipped straight at room temperature and almost had a thick, creamy feel on the palate. I like it.

Now, I’m not going to say I’m a huge connoisseur of vodkas; my experience is somewhat limited but I do know what I like, and I like this one. I’m going to go on record and say that I respectfully disagree with this review.

Certainly not the finest vodka in the world, but definitely a fine choice at this price range.

I agree. VikingFjord has the soft, creamy, bite-free mouthfeel you want in a potato vodka with less of a charcoal taste than Luksosova. I prefer it neat over my longtime favorite sipper, Stoli. The original revue seems a bit amateurish, comparing a smooth potato vodka to a spicy rye(Sobieski). Smirnoff may be in the same price range, but is probably just rubbing alc with ‘some’ of the methyl removed. Wheaters like GreyGoose are always infinitely more transparent, so they can’t really be compared either. But at a third of the price of premium potato spirits like Chopin, VF is in every way a winner! We don’t compare Rye Whiskey to Bourbon, do we? Nor do we compare Scotch to Brandy. Not all Vodka is created equal!

After going Bulletproof for my way of eating, I was looking for a potato based vodka. While there are more expensive choices, I love VF for the taste, the price and fewer after-effects than grain-based alcohol! Highly recommend!

I have been a big fan of Sevdka and then Sobieski. The local liquor store had a special on Vikingsfiord. Buy a case (6 bottles) for 80 and get $75 in mail in rebates. Jeeze, a whole case for $5, how can you go wrong. Well, we had no problems with the taste, and the price was right so this became our vodka of choice.

My wife has an alergy to wheat so we went on a potato vodka hunt. At one point we had 8 or 9 bottles going and taste tested with friends as well. Viking Fjord came out way on top and, for the price, could not be beat! We buy it by the case and pay $16.20 for 1.5L.

Great potato vodka! Soft, creamy, no rough edges whatsoever. The other potato vodka in the same range, Luksosova, is quite good too, but not nearly as ‘clean’ on the palate. None of the alcohol burn you’d expect from anything in this price range also. I taste just a hint of vanilla and marshmallow, but not in the sweet cloying manner of artificially flavored American vodkas. I don’t understand the comparisons to grain vodkas like Sobieski or Smirnoff, Pinnacle, etc., un-aged grain spirit is, in my opinion, like drinking cold broken glass. VikingFjord, on the other hand, is quite a pleasure! Smooth as a neat sipper and makes the best Caucasian ever. As far as potato vodka goes, unless you’ve got the change to spend triple on Chopin, I’d recommend VF any day.

I enjoy Titos Handmade quite a bit. So, I wasn’t expecting much from this Vodka. I was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness and the flavor. I bought Viking Fjord and just figured it would be like Sobieski potato vodka, which to me is too sharp, burns and not worth spending hard earned money on. Viking Fjord is actually pretty smooth and flavorful. The price is very decent for the quality of the Vodka. I have recommended this Vodka to my friends because of the taste and quality. Granted, its not Titos or Bombora quality but, it is the best potato Vodka I have tasted. Thumbs up for Viking Fjord

Good, not great. I know that Vikingfjord is relatively affordable, but there are better ones for less money. As a martini drinker, Vikingfjord doesn’t go down as smooth as I’d like. It’s probably no better than the Ruskova that I pay $14-$15 for a 1.75 liter bottle.
