Barton Vodka Review

Before now, I’ve never tried Barton Vodka. To be honest, I’ve never seen or heard of Barton Vodka until I started reviewing vodkas. It sits on the bottom shelf with other vodkas I commonly ignore.

The Shot

The taste is immediately bitter. It’s bold at first and gets stronger the longer it sits in my mouth. I notice the moisture being pulled from my tongue like I have with other cheap vodkas (e.g. Skol or Aristocrat). When I swallow, there is a strong, parching, ethanol burn. The bitterness fills the back of my throat. A chaser is required.

The Mixed Drink

I mixed with Passion Fruit juice. Barton’s mixes surprisingly well. It tastes slightly more bitter than Smirnoff when mixed. Barton Vodka is bearable, but certainly too bitter for casual drinking. If you’re pressed for a cheap Smirnoff replacement (though I hope you are never required to do such), Barton Vodka would be a great choice.

Opinions

Barton Vodka is better than most other bottom shelf vodkas, but doesn’t quite fall into the bottom of the middle range. If you need a really cheap vodka, Barton Vodka is probably what you want. However, if you like the people you’re drinking with, I’d suggest shelling out the extra cash for Smirnoff.

I go through 1.75 liters of this stuff every nine days. Never a hangover. Put it in the fridge. It`s much better chilled. I take two mouthfuls a night (7oz.) and chase it with iced tea. Been doing it for years and I still have most of my liver.

So most of these reviews are either insane, it’s all either folks saying “if you drink anything but top shelf vodka you are dumb” or “WOO COLLEGE! GET RIPPED!” Both those views are fine I guess, but here’s something from a middle-income 30-something who mostly lays low at home but still gets together with old friends to get drunk and play some cards or video games. I don’t know if I’m Barton’s target market but I do drink it occasionally.

I’m rating it a 3. Why? Well, if you were drinking it straight, or in a martini, I’d give it a 1. It’s pretty bitter, and I wouldn’t recommend serving it as a shot. But in a mixed drink, I’d rate it a 4. Damn good, not the best, but barely noticable, and a lot of the bitterness is covered up by the mixer. So that’s an average of 2.5, and I’m rounding up due to the insanely low price point.

Look, for a mixed drink, premium spirits are a waste. You could step your game up a notch to Svedka, or a couple notches to Stoli or Skyy. Any more than that, and you’re wasting money in any cocktail besides a martini. Barton isn’t fancy but it doesn’t lag far behind the top guys in terms of drinkability. So it’s your call. It isn’t the best, but if you’re looking for a cheap brand for mixing, you could do way worse than Barton.

For whatever it’s worth I’ve seen various comments on stomach aches or bad hangovers with Barton and that has not been my experience, any more than any other spirit. And to the guy who had seven shots and didn’t feel it: dude, you have a problem and you need help.

But you’ll certainly like the feeling of ethanol in your brain, if you like being really drunk. If you like being a little drunk, but want a bottle to last a long time. Bartons! I love. Vodka and as far as Barton’s goes it’s rough straight or in a Martini but this makes for a great punch or mixed drinks. Had no hangover, and really mixes well. I drink Stoli or Ketel One if I am drinking Martinis or a light mixer like sprite. And if you have the time run this through a brita filter 2 or 3 times and it seriously gets rid of the bitter taste

This stuff costs $3.49 for a 175 mL bottle at my local liquor store. Cheapest stuff they got (not counting those little mini bar bottles). Buy this almost all the time, ’cause I’m a “budget drinker”. I drink it straight, right from the bottle. And this stuff is rough. Gives me goosebumps every time I take a shot. And I almost always have to fight the urge to vomit. But if you’re trying to get drunk on less than 5 bucks. Then Barton is your go to Vodka. Usually half of a 175 mL 80 proof bottle is enough to get me feeling good.

Barton’s is an adequate vodka at an incredible price. When taken as a shot it starts out very smooth but finishes extremely harsh definitely requiring a chaser. The taste is almost completely ethanol and it burns immensely going down. But where Barton’s really shines is in a mix drink. It goes down flawlessly and very smooth, as if, it weren’t even there. There is definitely a bitter, less appealing taste to Bartons, but if you’re having a party and need several handles to inject into water melons or make a big bowl of punch, then Bartons will have nobody knowing the difference from a 2x price vodka. Obviously, if you are looking to enjoy a martini, then you have enough sense to spend a few more duckets for at least Smirnoff. As far as top shelf goes, Soli is the best, several blind taste tests among friends proves it every time, no need for a $50 bottle

Well I just gotta say, as a Utahn, (In utah the beer here isn’t above 3.2%) I really appreciate this Vodka for the fact that it’s just a very “base” drink. I prefer whiskey and bourbon, I don’t drink anything not made in America. Red whit and blue is the way to go. Bourbon is an American drink at best… That being said,
This Vodka is american made and being here in Utah and all, it’s great actually for mixing with beer. Strange thing to say, right? You don’t mix liquor and beer cause it ruins the liquor, right?
Well, with this vodka – you actually can. Drinking it straight is only if your pure goal is getting drunk, and it’s great for mixes. Because of it’s lick of anything else exciting to do with it, you can blend it in beer to make the content higher. I think that’s pretty damn awesome. And drinking it straight is the biggest punch you’ll get that goes down the easiest way possible.
It’s not a drink that goes all that well by itself, it’s more of a very useful utility drink. Great for if you’re out of beer and other liquor and you need a little more to get that buzz and stuff.
It’s a must have, honestly. It’s cheap but you’ve gotta have it.

Getting back into vodka drinking after a long hiatus. In the past, I usually went for Absolut, Stoli, or Ketel One (especially when trying to impress the crowd). Recently I’ve come to enjoy Sobieski, Finlandia, and Burnett’s. Svedka and Dark Eyes produce headaches/hangovers for me,and Skyy tastes weird so I avoid them. Barton is a mediocre choice, as is the case with Barton Whiskey. It’s definitely nothing impressive, and you had best have a mixer..it isn’t smooth.

My current favorite for this price range is Burnett’s, which is very smooth and have yet to get a hangover…beats the hell outta Barfton and is the same price @12.99

    Very cheap. $10 for a 1.75 liter. 40% abv.

Compared it side by side with smirnoff (which just tastes like ethanol) and it has a relatively unpleasant profile with notes of sulfur and ammonia.

This difference isn’t really noticeable unless you put them side by side, the flavor is around 95% ethanol, like any vodka should be.

No issues with hangovers or unusual effects.

It mixes well, don’t see any difference between it and a 20 or 30 dollar vodka when mixed.

With vodka if you’re going to mix it, you should always aim for the best value unless you like wasting money. Whisky, other spirits with flavor, are a different story. If you want to drink it like a russian, you should spend a few more dollars for smirnoff or a low-mid shelf $15 bottle that doesn’t taste like urine.

The most worst vodka or alcohol that I’ve ever had. Every time I drink 1/2 -1 fifth of this crap (mix drink or not), I wake up the next morning feeling like I’m dying!!! I have a huge headache and sleepiness, my stomach feels like it’s been ripped apart by drinking glass.. Also, I get very nauseated, diahrea, gas, bad body pains and aches, and weakness. It feels as if this crap “dries out” my joints and causes severe knee and other joint pains. I don’t vomit though, thank God. All of this, even when I drink water and eat both before, and after drinking… My recommendation is to NOT touch it at all. If you’re broke or want/need to wait til payday, go sober or please, PLEASE, buy at least Popov or anything else!

One of the worst vodkas ever to be sold Don’t listen to any of the 4 or 5 star rankings, pulling your chain lol. Look I’m all for cheap vodka, thats all I ever buy. There’s plenty of other cheap options out there. This stuff goes for 14 for the 1.75 near me. Taaka goes for 10-12 near me in the same size. The difference is you can drink and drink Taaka and it won’t burn a hole in your stomach. After 3 strong drinks Barton has almost a painful effect. Even Kavlana goes for 10.50 for the same size at Bevmo and it’s still better.

No, according to several articles on the web from actual news organizations–that obviously
had slow news days–there is little connection between price and discernible taste.

I read one the other day to get a review on Popov–which they said was just fine–except
my grocer did not have it today. Anyway, I googled just now and found several more
articles with the same conclusions. As with at least some other spirits, law governs
vodka production, so price is more attributable to marketing costs than actual quality.

This article was the first in my google results:
      https://www.npr.org/2018/03/01/590022606/is-there-really-a-difference-between-expensive-vodka-and-cheap-vodka
Humorously, this article at one point cited some researcher’s finding that people spent too much money
on alcohol in order to feel good about themselves.

But go ahead and google yourself. Nothing wrong with Barton, in my humble opinion.
