Moskovskaya Vodka

5 StarStarStarStarStar

Moskovskaya Vodka is a 40% ABV vodka from Russia. The vodka is produced by Sojuzplodoimport and imported by Carillon Importers Ltd. The quality is considered to be amazing. The average price is around $10.15 per 750mL. Rated 5 out of 5 based on 16 reviews.

The bottle states the following:

Moskovskaya is the most distinctive vodka in the world. Distilled from rich grain and finished with pure grlacial waters, Moskovskaya is imported from Russia, the birthplace of great vodka. Try it chilled neat (traditional Russian style), on the rocks or with your favorite juice or mixer.

Moskovskaya Vodka Review

My friend Troy’s favorite vodka is Moskovskaya. He’s been talking about it for years, but he thought it wasn’t available in the US. We even discussed how we could import the vodka via private courier, much like importing Absinthe several years ago. It turns out Applejack in Denver had several bottles. I was stoked when I found them.

The Shot

Moskovskaya is wonderful. Even at room temperature, it’s flavorless and smooth. In fact, it seems better at room temperature than chilled. As I said, it’s flavorless the entire time it’s in the mouth. There is a slightly odd flavor on the swallow (an almost citrus or lime flavor), but it goes down smooth without need of a chaser. This is great vodka at an amazing price. This competes with Crystal Head at about 1/4 the price.

The Mixed Drink

I mixed Moskovskaya with Crystal Light. It mixes perfectly without changing the flavor at all. Given its qualities as a straight sipping vodka, it’s a safe bet that Moskovskaya will mix well with whatever you like.

Final Thoughts

If you can find Moskovskaya, you should try it. That’s all I have to say. If that’s not recommendation enough, I don’t know what is.

Rated 5 out of 5.

I drank a 750 ml of this last summer at a hotel outside of Munich. It was cheap as hell and seriously not bad. But not the mind-blowing experience I had with Tito’s Homemade Vodka.

Of all of the recently reviewed vodkas that have reignited my vodka quest, this one seems the most intriguing. There are a fair number of great vodkas out there, but very few that are also inexpensive. Hopefully, this vodka is on the shelf of one of the nearby liquor stores.

I got into this stuff in 1999 in Toronto after arriving from Melbourne, Australia. Loved it and still do. Great neat or – as I prefer – heavily chilled with ice, with V8 juice. Only Tito’s is better but at a 25+% premium. I feel decadent drinking this over all other vodkas.

Just like with Stoli, there’s apparently two different Moskovskaya Vodkas out there since Soyuzplodimport and Soyuzplodoimport (notice the extra o) are still battling each other in court. From what I can tell “SPI Group” currently has the rights to sell it in the US, but oddly enough I found a bottle being sold near the Canadian border that appeared to have been bottled by Soyuzplodoimport (aka the Russian government). The government-bottled version has Russian characters inside of the globe logo instead of the letters SPI, and uses a cheap-tinny gold-colored cap for the bottle, whereas the version bottled by SPI appears to have a sturdier cap construction. I have no yet tried the SPI version since it’s really hard to find Moskovsakaya for sale around where I live now, so this review will be for the SoyuzplodOimport version that you would buy if you went to Russia. It’s not clear to me whether or not both versions are actually the same or not, I guess only SPI and Soyuzplodoimport would know.

See here for more info about the legal battle: http://www.just-drinks.com/news/spi-group-condemns-courts-stolichnaya-ruling_id107761.aspx

OK, legal battles aside, I bought this bottle of Moskovskaya because 1) this was *the* vodka that “commoners” used to drink in Russia back in the day (vs Stoli which was meant for communist leaders and whatnot) and 2) it was $8.99 for a whole liter bottle. The version I bought had as mentioned above, a super cheap cap made of ultra-thin metal, and I could see you hurting yourself trying to get it off since metal shrapnel tends to tear off. Good thing there’s a drinking age because this cap was definitely not safe for kids. The great thing is that you can actually drink this vodka straight, even a little bit warm and the only thing you really taste is a little bit of sweetness. Yes, there’s a burn like with anything that’s 80 proof, but it wasn’t unbearable and there was no aftertaste other than the lingering subtle sweetness. Drinking it straight from the bottle with my female friends, one still cringed at the burning but I don’t think any vodka would have done better. My other friends tolerated it surprisingly well for a $9 bottle of vodka.

Still my favorite $10 or under vodka, but it’s rather difficult to find.

Sobieski is about the same price, or perhaps a little cheaper according to this forum. Have you tried it? If so, how do you like it compared to Moskovskaya?

Moskovskaya is a really common vodka in germany and certainly the best one youll find in ordinary supermarkets. Just great quality for the price of 9 euros for a 0,5l bottle (yes a lot more expensive than in the US but still worth it). Only had Sobieski once because my friends father got a bottle of it as present on a business trip in poland. The bottle had been in the freezer for a few hours and was almost syrup-like . I was amazed! incredible stuff. Sobieski pretty much made me get interested in good vodka.

Id say that both of them are amazing vodkas, incredible value but I prefere Sobieski, maybe because I wasnt used to the tatse. I would chose both Moskovskaya and Sobieski above, say, Ketel one though without a doubt. I really would recommend you to buy a bottle or two if you can find them!

I think its a bit of an exaggeration to say its up there with Crystal head though, Crystal Head is still the best vodka I drank for sure. (have been looking for Jean Marc XO for quite a while now to compare them but not that easy to find ultra-premium vodkas around here)

        Hope that helps you :)
