Relska Vodka Review

In an attempt to add more vodkas to our bottom shelf, I grabbed a bottle of Relska.

The Shot

Relska is slightly bitter when it hits the tongue. As with most cheap vodkas, it dries the mouth as it sits. The taste got more and more bitter. The swallow burned a bit and the aftertaste was, of course, bitter. That said, this was one of the best 40 proof bottom shelf vodkas I’ve had. It’s definitely bottom shelf, though.

The Mixed Drink

Relska mixed with Passion Fruit Juice was surprisingly good. The flavor of the vodka barely pops out, but it doesn’t ruin the drink. For a bottom shelf vodka, Relska is a great mixer.

Opinions

Erin said it isn’t terrible as a mixer. She said there is a definitely an ethanol flavor, though. In the end she was surprised that it was as good of a mixer as it was.

Daniel and Mel tried a shot with me. Neither of them loved it, but neither of them looked sick after. So, it must not have been that bad for the single shot.

Relska is a decent mixer. If you’re shooting, you’d do better to pick up something better. If you’re mixing and you’re in a pinch, Relska might get you through your rough spot.

Rated 1 out of 5.

I Tend to agree with Doug. I like Relska. I drink mostly vodka, and it is my vodka of choice, bottom shelf or not. I tend to mix it. I rarely drink shots of anything. except at home by the fire. Then maybe some Irish or mid level scots or a bourbon like henry mckinna. It, Relska has no unpleasant aftertaste, even if you do shots ( put it in the frezzer), leaves no terrible hangover or other ill effects (unless you drink too much of it, but that can happen with anything) and leaves my bank account free to do other more important things. True, to some it might be considered”bottom shelf” but I’ts really not. if you want bottom self, check out MrBoston, Aristocrat, or Travelers Club. Also, they don’t advertise. They don’t have to. ( like some restaurants , lawyers, doctors and insurance companies etc…)My Dad was a state trooper. And he drank, but was never drunk. But He and Mom tought us the value of not paying high prices for labels. I live in NC. So I might be biased toward Doug’s opinion. Red or yellow, black or white, not everyone in the south drinks corn likker, nor thinks JD was God’s gift ( overrated and over priced) . ( if you drink untaxed shine, you BETTER know were it came from, and its not cheaper any way). Anyways, it’s up to you. I prefer to use the savings on more important things, like like salt water fishing trips, coin collecting, fly tying and gold panning. You know, the important stuff. also helping people.

I _totally_ disagree with those (above) who cite Relska as ‘bitter’ or ‘bottom shelf’ in terms of quality. I’ve been working my way across the (physically) bottom shelf of Virginia ABC stores of late, occasionally straying higher up toward eye level, and I was more than pleasantly surprised with this spirit from… where?… it doesn’t say. (And a google of “Lrelsky & CIE” brings me right back here, to vodkabuzz!)
And for poor Sarah, who had her poor tum ripped out after a cupful, I had 3/4 of a liter last night and felt NO after-affects this morning.
A few brand I’ve “suffered” of late have left me feeling blood-poisoned in the morning, and for much of that day. Really!
But this brand, which seems smoother to me than Stolie and _any other_ brand I’ve sampled (!), is not, IMHO, to be scoffed at. Whoever is making it, and I’d suspect it’s Russians, or Poles, is doing something _very_ right!
I’ve consumed fine Russian vodka in that country.. and some pretty horrid stuff, too. I’ve been to vodka tastings in a couple of countries where, like wine tastings, you roll it around and spit it out — being anxious to discover the ‘mouth’ affect, not the alcohol-in-the-bloodstream one. I’d put this one up again any I’ve tasted.

We seem to be kindred spirits about spirits.
I have also been exploring the lowers shelves of the VA ABC stores where I stumbled across Relska.
I’m not quite sure that it’s my favorite, and I’ll admit I felt a certain sharpness at my first taste, but a couple of shots in and it becomes quite pleasant.

I asked my friend at the liquor store for the cheapest smallest bottle of vodka. He picked out a half pint of Relska to clean out my nicotine vaporizor. It worked fine for the task. So… I tried a sip. Was just awful. Tried it with a bit of olive juice. Was pretty darn good, ok I was curious, don’t judge. Relska in my opinion is pretty much the same as the old Smirnoff RED. Incidentally… I hate the new Smirnoff red and miss the old version. Don’t drink Relska straight, it has to be mixed with something salty.

this stuff got me through the military years just fine. The main advantage of drinking it is the price per liter. The secondary benefit is when mixing a liter with a 12 ounce can of orange juice from the machine, people only ask for a sip of it once.

Normally drink Smirnoff, and prefer vodkas over anything. Relska isnt near as bad as expected! I actually expected fingernail polish remover taste, but… I think this is my new drink of choice! Its absolutely not about the money, thats for certain! Not a bad burn, not a bad aftertaste, and the buzz is nice..

No, I dont mix, I drink my vodkas straight up, no ice, no mixers, just room temps.. and have for years! I have tried the more expensive brands, and usually feel like I wasted my money on a name or cool looking bottle.

Have a $50 glass skull of vodka, and it tastes horrid! Had absolut, Svedka, and many many more.. Relska vodka may be called “bottom shelf” but it is in no way bottom shelf in my opinion..

I am a daily vodka drinker, and absolutely enjoy this brand. I would expect to pay double the cost and certainly would..

Okay… This stuff is gross. I tried straight and as a mixer and it just doesn’t do it for me. It’s labelled as a “Vodka Specialty Spirit” which means they add “flavor” to the vodka. Good luck trying to figure out what that flavor actually is. Good vodka is meant to have a clean taste with little burn. This stuff made me gag. It will get you snockered though, so there’s always that.
