Skol Vodka Review

0 StarStarStarStarStar

Once upon a time (when I was in college), I served drinks at a country club. At some point in my tenure there, Skol became the official well vodka. I thought it was sad that they were using a vodka cheaper than Smirnoff. However, I never bothered to try Skol to see if it compared. I decided to change that.

The Shot

The initial taste hides behind the chill. As the vodka warms in my mouth, the moisture slowly gets ripped away, forcing me to swallow. Skol rips and burns all the way down my throat. The aftertaste is so bitter it requires a chaser.

The Mixed Drink

The mixer was Red Bull. The mixed drink was horrible. It tasted like the Red Bull was spoiled.

Opinions

Luckily, I didn’t have anyone drinking with me. If you want a bottom shelf vodka, there are better options than Skol.

i am amazed by all the negative comments about skol. as of this minute , i am swallowing 3 ounces of skol ,straight at room temperature. over many years i have purchased many cheap brands of vodka. the absolute worst came from a grocery chain known as albertson’s .since i was born in the south,as a child i was given many folk remedies for common ailments. one of these “medicants” was turpentine. albertson’s vodka tasted like turpentine and was totally undrinkable. my other choice has always been crystal palace over many years, i have put crystal palace and skol into bottles with expensive brand names on the bottles and not one of my friends ever noted that what they were drinking didn’t taste right. I do have a palate for various forms of alcohol jim beam white label is my favorite bourbon. chivas is my favorite scotch. i don’t care for gin, but my fave is tanqueray. since i began writing these few sentences, i have consumed another 3or 4 ounces of skol. i think i need to pass out. also i have swallowed several xanax and a couple of oxyconton.

I’m Russian, so I can claim some vodka “expertise”, and I always drink my vodka neat. No fancy cocktails. Now, having said that, I drink in moderation and ALWAYS with a hearty meal. My favorite vodka is “White Birch”, which is unfortunately not available in the US. The second favorite is “Russian Standard”.

So few days ago I found myself at a liquor store in Bennington, VT and wondering what to buy. RS was over $20 a bottle and I wanted to try something else, like Icelandic, but it was about the same. I thought what the heck, why not try something different? Sköl was $4.99 for the same 750 ml.

Now, it is NOT BAD AT ALL. It’s not as smooth as I’m used to, the taste I can describe as ” acidic” and my wife compared it to potato moonshine, but so far it does what it should WITHOUT NASTY side effects!

So for the value I give it solid four stars.

Alex, I learned to drink vodka thanks to a Russian friend, and I, too, appreciate Skol as a decent vodka that isn’t the horrific thing previously reviewed. Frankly, what mos Americans appreciate in vodka is the extensive distillation process that removes every vestige of flavor from the vodka, leaving it tasting like water. In my opinion (and the opinion of the delightful Russian friend who introduced me to vodka), if you don’t like the way vodka tastes, maybe you shouldn’t be drinking vodka in the first place. :^)

I like Skol… For the price tag of $8, where I live, it’s down right amazing. It goes down smooth and mixes very well.

I could almost compare it to Sobieski.. except Sobieski has a MUCH more pronounced after bite.

Skol is easily my 2nd choice of Vodka’s, right after Tito’s.

Blind taste tests against 32 premiums and skol ranks 10th… I’m not gonna go broke over vodka; I like it too much… I’ve used it as a well brand at a 4 star New Orleans restaurant for years and consumed it ever since… it ain’t bad at all and price wise, you can drink a lot of it afforabbly IMO:)

This vodka is great, whoever is posting this vodka as one star or no stars obviously does not know how to drink alcohol correctly. Vodka can be drunk as a shot or two in a mixed drink, or made as part of a cocktail, or made into a martini on ice. Drinking it out of the bottle or criticizing it because of your old relative or what it does to their liver is not a reason to review their vodka. Skol tastes good for the price. It’s not the cheapest vodka, and it doesn’t taste cheap. It makes a good cocktail or mixed drink, if you drink responsibility, and try to drink one drink an hour instead of a gallon!

Even accounting for taste, I don’t understand how anybody could confuse Skol with decent vodka. It has an awful sulfurous taste that makes itself known even through layers of sweet mixer. Only when I’m already stinking drunk do I ever even consider buying Skol, and I always immediately regret it (not the next day, immediately!)

I hide my expensive stuff in my basement bar when my friends come over. I mix their stuff with Skol and they love it. I drink it casually and it never gives me bad hangovers. I think it is more than fine for the price and we all get the right result after hitting it a bit…

Skol is one of those things you sort of start to tolerate over time, it’s dirt cheap, and gets the job done. I prefer it to Taaka (same price here in TN) since I’ve never successfully managed to drink Taaka and not feel like I was going to die the next day. It’s sharp to the taste, and taking a shot without properly priming and chasing it has a similar feeling to that of eating steel wool that’s coated in hot-sauce. It’s rough, and unforgiving, but for the price I still drink it.

Straight: Try not to smell it, and I also wouldn’t recommend it.
Primed, and Chased: Proper priming completely eliminates the horrific taste, as well as masking the burn, when done properly it tastes like you’re just drinking flat soda.
As a mixer: With real OJ, not horrific, just tastes like the orange juice is about to go bad, when using orange drink it tastes awkwardly like metallicy-orangeish water, mixed with soda, it makes the soda taste old and flat.
In a cocktail: No, you’re making cocktails, make those right.

If you’re just in it for the buzz it’s not a bad choice, just prime and chase for shots with (diet) soda. if you’re looking to drink something you’ll enjoy, I recommend Absolut, or anything else for that matter Taaka being a personal exception.

When ordering a shot of/drink containing vodka at a restaurant, always make sure you aren’t going to end up with it. I’ve seen several restaurants use it as their house vodka, and paying anymore than $4 for a pint makes it completely undesirable.

I’m not a big drinker – I usually buy a fifth every two weeks. Ive taken to buying Svedka after reading the review here. Most times it can be found for $9.25 – at that price it is a steal. Recently, probably because of gas prices, it has went up to almost $14. In not really wanting to blow $15 after taxes on my after dinner drink or two, I went with Skol for $7.50, and I’m so damned sorry I did. It is hard to be shocked considering I knew what I was getting into, but I am.

Actually, I prefer straight vodka to mixed drinks. Until recently, that was the only way I drank vodka. For reviews, I don’t simply knock back shots. I try to take in the flavor and experience the vodka, rather than throw it down. I’m sure one could get by on Skol if they shot and chased it so fast that they didn’t “savor” it. However, while trying to enjoy the vodka, I just don’t see how anyone could prefer the taste of Skol, even ignoring the obvious bottom-shelf-ness of the vodka. It seems to me Skol isn’t and doesn’t pretend to be a good vodka.

That said, everyone is entitled to his own opinion. If you want to drink Skol, I certainly won’t stop you.

I haven’t been able to quantify hangover potential. A lot of that does have to do with the impurities that don’t get filtered out, but it has a lot more to do with whether you re-hydrate (since alcohol causes dehydration, which has all kinds of nasty effects associated with hangovers), whether you ate food during / after drinking (as I’ve found eating a good meal after reduces the stomach nausea), and how well your metabolism works (as I found in my younger years that I rarely had hangovers and now I have them more often as my metabolism slows with age).

So, I could say whether I got one, but I don’t think it’d be indicative of other people’s experience and it may unjustly show poorly for a vodka if I didn’t take care of myself before bed. That said, for the Imperia review (currently rated #4), I did mention the hangover (or lack of one). I did this because their site specifically pointed out the lower impurities would result in less of a hang over.

As far as reviews, I am the only reviewer at this point. I usually post my opinions, then post those of the people I drank with at the end of the review. So, not only did I review Rain, I reviewed every vodka on the site. Rain is a really great vodka for the dollar. You may be interested in Sobieski as well. It’s priced around Smirnoff, but is better than Stoli. In fact, it’s better than a lot of vodkas I’ve had. It’s currently rated #6.

Back in my early drinking career, I grabbed a large plastic bottle of Skol vodka off the bottom shelf. The price was unmatched. I immediately commenced my drinking session and well, long story short, that stuff ain’t vodka. I was drinking it straight out of the bottle and halfway through i still retained high quality brain function. It was the most disappointing purchase I’ve ever made that includes the copy of a John Corabi-era Motely Crue album I bought. Buyer beware.
